By Natalye Childress

a picture of reality says so much more than i ever could

fog haze
soft light
shadows

etched further into my mind
than the intricacies of
your expression

cold tears
numbing pain
trembling lips

more feeling
than sweet shivers under
the caress of your touch

you are a breath of
infinity to fill my void

yellow branches
hang low and disappear
into dark dark dark

glazed air
shines
clear
through the confusion

fumbling hands slide
over a candlelit heart

when does the flame die out?
(keep feeding it)

rock solid
unendurable
fleeting dullness
and
intertwined skies

dampened
words blur in
their unfathomable disarray
made known between us
inside everything and

the absurdity of now
juxtaposes the memory
of our forever

and things would be easier if perhaps my feelings changed with the seasons

leaves fall
fade away

(where do they go?
to a factory?)

the brilliance stays on

gradual memory
forging upon the past

(you too will fall from
branches projected upon
my mind)

where then
will you go?

bleakness crouches
stares me in the eye

i fake nonchalance
pretend it does not exist

things don’t begin to be real
until
you accept them

deny
the very nature
which brought us
to this
intersection

(leftrightstraightahead
can’t turn back now)

breeze becomes cooler
moisture fills the air
nights come unexpected

the times they creep upon us

(yet our hearts
remain
unchanged)

soon will i

fall from within

as my heart reminds my mind of what it wants to forget

don’t leave me
alone

we’re so natural together

you affect me
in all the ways you
shouldn’t

as the degrees of separation
lessen
and everything about
you makes sense

always reminding me of
the inability
to go back

strident you
entering my life
turning the scene

upsidedowninsideout

emotions
dying an
untimely death

while every moment
replays in my
mind

trust me when i say
i care

and dare not leave
my heart prevents

run over vocabulary

limitlessness
has reached
a quota

and there’s nothing left to say

silence
on the open road
is the most beautiful thing
with you

your name still tastes as bittersweet upon my lips

serendipitous

constituents of this
overture brought us
together

though they remain
irrevocable i
am still aware that

never doesn’t always
last an
eternity

negligent of this

(-ness)

you smile and it
doesn’t
even begin to hinder this

maybe if only you could
exist within my future
days when these
erroneous
intuitions cease to
rule
over my heart in
silhouette

the words and the world and the meanings pile up

the days
flush and heave
searching for importance

red heat
reflected
bathes the world in
solid light

(it’s always bleeding through)

lost in this
concrete labyrinth

metal
sheetrock
aluminum

continually running into walls

silver
constriction
frames

an osteoporosis to
the body

tearing down
mechanically
so absolutely

reduced to a dim
confining box

this
new art form rage

i scream
at you
to you
for you

welcome to the
mental reality
of a world you cannot beat

benediction

in a second
everything you dream
is gone

go out into the world
make it your own

don’t shield your eyes
from the beauty

capture the sights

one moment
caught forever
holds more validity
than one thousand moments
lost in time

observe
and
hold dear

live with passion

let it drive you
(make it your
only motivation)

do not search for
justification
or you will only be
met with
disappointment

greet each new experience
as an opportunity
to learn and grow

leaves will fall
but too often
we forget
they return

trapped in a mind
too eager
to accept all as
truth

continue searching
as it sets in
a quest for life
will reward itself
with satisfaction

wipe the dust
off this shattered lens
pick up the pieces
and place them deep to
fill the wounds

let the light shine through

there are a
multitude of
sunrises yet to appear
upon the
horizon

which cannot afford to
be taken for granted
